Bullying is DEADLY!
As parents we have an instinct to protect our children. If an adult ever tried to harm our child we would do everything in our power to stop them immediatley!
However, everyday we send our kids to school, not knowing if they are PREPARED to defend themselves against a threat that is much more common, THE BULLY!
There are 3 Major types of Bulling that occurs in and out of school.
- Verbal Bullying
- Physical Bullying
- Cyber Bullying
Verbal Bullying:
This type of bullying is when the bully uses his/her words with negative and harmful intent. This type of bullying could elevate into a physical confrontation very fast.
Examples: insults, threats and slander.
Physical Bullying:
This type of bullying consists of any action taking toward your child that could result in physical harm.
Examples: Punches, Kicks, Pushes, Grabs, Chokes, The Throwing of Objects, etc...
Cyber Bullying:
This type of bullying is when your child is negatively being talked about on the internet.
Examples: e-mails, I.M's, Social Media: Facebook, Myspace and Twitter etc...
I have put together my 10 Steps to BULLY PROOF your Child to assist your child and EVERYONE that you share with with to become empowered to NEVER become a victim of Bullying.
Please read these to and with your child.
Tip #1: Develop UNSHAKEABLE Self-Confidence.
There are many types of bullying going on these days and they all have different ways that you should handle them, however developing Self-Confidence is IMPERATIVE to your success in dealing with ALL types of bullying.
Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to tell on a Bully.
Children are often afraid to speak up and tell a trusted adult about a bully situation for a variety of reasons. Communicate with your child and assure them that coming to you is ALWAYS the best option.
Tip #3: Communicate with POWER!
When you are speaking to a bully during a verbal confrontation, speak with POWER! The Bully must FEEL your intent through your words.
Tip #4: Quickly Assume a Ready Stance!
EVERY time you are involved in a verbal confrontation, quickly assume the ready stance position. Step back with your strong leg and bring your hands up and face your palms towards the bully. This represents the notion that you don’t want to fight, but you are protected just in case the conflict turns physical.
Tip #5: Walk with a PURPOSE!
Your body language is ALWAYS telling a “story”, are you telling the story of a victim or a confident person that will NOT allow them to bully you. Always walk with your head up and eyes focused in the direction you are going.
Tip #6: If you are attacked, fight to escape, NOT to win!
If you are physically attacked by a bully, use your Self-Defense Skills to escape and run away, not to win the fight and hurt the bully.
Tip #7: Bullying on the internet is still Bullying!
There is a huge increase in the number of kids being bullied on the internet (Cyber Bullying). Please monitor your child's computer as well as explain to them that words with harmful intent have the same effect on the internet as they do in person.
Tip #8: Watch your Child’s Behavior.
A change in your child’s behavior is usually a good indicator that something is going on emotionally and they are dealing with some challenging situations that need attention.
Some behavior changes to watch out for:
- Depression.
- More Quiet than usual.
- Reluctant to go to school.
- They are spending more time than usual by themselves.
- They do not like to talk about their day.
- And as parents, USE YOUR GUT INSTINCT!
Tip #9: NO ONE has the right to touch you if it makes you feel uncomfortable!
Please instill this principle with your children. If a Bully is putting their hands on your child with harmful or threatening intent, your child MUST remove the bully’s hands immediately with aggression. This will send a message to the Bully that your child will NOT become their victim.
Tip #10: Make Personal Safety Education and Training a part of your child’s life.
I operate with the belief that Personal Safety MUST be a part of EVERYONE’S life. You do not need to join a Martial Arts school and spend 5 years earning a Black Belt in order to become a safer more confident person. Find a program that can train you in weeks rather than years!
I sincerely thank you for your interest in Personal Safety. It is such an honor to serve the community and assist my students in their Personal Safety Development.
It would be my pleasure to assist you with any questions that you might have regarding Self-Defense Education and Training for yourself or family.
